UPPER LAKE >> Freshman quarterback Kellen Smith passed for two touchdowns while Jared Thornberry returned an interception for another score in Upper Lake’s 30-14 victory over the Point Arena Pirates in non-league junior varsity football action on Friday in Upper Lake.
Russell Gordon Jr. and Desmond Mueller caught Smith’s touchdown passes.
“We won the battle at the line of scrimmage, something we worked on all week in practice,” Upper Lake coach Russell Gordon Sr. said.
Linebacker Mark Dutcher anchored the Upper Lake defense, according to Gordon Sr.
“Big kudos to the defense for a great job,” Gordon Sr. said.
It was Upper Lake’s first JV game of the season because each of the varsity team’s first three opponents – Los Molinos, Stuart Hall and Rincon Valley Christian – do not field JV teams. The Cougars return to Point Arena on Saturday for another non-league game. The varsity plays Round Valley at Covelo on the same day in the North Central League III North opener for both teams.
