LAKEPORT >> The preliminary examination for Joshua Caleb Brown has been continued to October 4 after he appeared for a master calendar call hearing at the Lake County Superior Court.

Brown has entered pleas of not guilty to all counts after an incident during the summer when he allegedly fired toward CalTrans workers and law enforcement officers.

Brown, who also goes by the first name of “Buck,” is charged with two counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer, two counts of threats to commit crime, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, person prohibited — in possession of ammunition, and two counts of discharging firearm in a negligent manner.

The charges stem from an incident last month when a CalTrans crew was set to begin work to remove concrete allegedly placed illegally along Highway 29 by Brown just south of Kelseyville. A California Highway Patrol unit was also on hand to assist with traffic control.

According to law enforcement reports, Brown confronted the officers and workers and then fired two shots in their direction. Lake County Sheriff’s units responded. Shortly after a Sheriff’s unit arrived on scene, Brown reportedly fired another shot towards the officer’s direction.

Brown had allegedly been involved in a dispute with a neighbor. Investigators say Brown placed about a yard worth of concrete and debris in front of his property’s driveway, blocking a gate. He then used a tractor to carve another driveway that accessed Highway 29, according to law enforcement reports.

The Preliminary Examination will take place on October 4, 2017 at 8:15 a.m. in a department to be announced and the defendant is ordered to be present.
