ST. HELENA >> Yareli Lozano posted another big cross country win Wednesday afternoon as the Kelseyville High School girls team turned back Cloverdale 20-38 in a Coastal Mountain Conference meet at St. Helena.
St. Helena also scored against Fort Bragg in the four-team meet.
“She has been putting in the time and effort,” Kelseyville coach Jeff Weller said of Lozano’s transition from a good runner a year ago into a more dominating one in 2017. “She had some nagging injuries that got the best of her last year, but she is injury free so far and running like it,” Weller said. “She’s always been a capable runner. Now she’s learning to push herself and still finish and finish strong. Self-confidence really comes into play.”
Lozano’s winning time was 20 minutes and 31 seconds on the 2.85-mile St. Helena home course, more than 90 seconds ahead of her closest pursuer.
Other individual times were not available but three other Kelseyville runners cracked the top 10 and a fourth just missed. Laurel Weller ran fifth, Bailey Couey was seventh, Brianne Henry came in ninth, and Bailey Huggins was 11th.
“The girls did great,” Weller said.
Varsity boys
Paden Collard of Cloverdale dominated the field in the varsity boys division, running first in 17:17. Luis Mosqueda of Kelseyville placed fourth in 18:50 and teammate Jeff Amendola was ninth in 20:08.
Beau Marek, one of the Knights’ top runners, missed the meet with a hip injury.
Also for the Knights, Leo Rodriguez finished in 23:36, Leland Kirkpatrick in 26:03 and Dylan Escobedo in 28:44.
Kelseyville’s teams go up against Lower Lake in four-team meet next Wednesday at Highland Springs where Clear Lake and Middletown also will be competing.
