LOWER LAKE >> Law enforcement officers successfully detonated a device thought to be a homemade bomb in Lower Lake on Thursday.

Thomas Everett Knight, 31 of Lower Lake, is in custody on an outstanding warrant. He is also alleged to be connected to the device.

According to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Corey Paulich, deputies discovered the suspected bomb during a traffic stop on Thursday afternoon. At approximately 1:15 p.m. a patrol in the area of Quarterhorse Lane stopped a vehicle as they believed it was occupied by Knight, who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Deputies identified Knight as a passenger in the vehicle.

While deputies were conducting a search of the vehicle, the noticed a black rubber casing wrapped with duct tape. The device also had a long fuse coming from the top.

“Knight told the deputies that the device was explosive in nature,” Paulich said in a prepared statement.

Assistance was requested from the Napa County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad. The Napa County Bomb Squad responded to the area and safely detonated the device, rendering it safe.

Knight was arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail where he was booked into custody for the warrant and for possession of a destructive device.

As of Friday afternoon Knight remained in custody with bail set $15,000.
