UPPER LAKE >> Julia Mooney’s hat trick proved to be the perfect remedy for Upper Lake’s losing streak as the Cougars beat the Tomales Braves 4-1 in girls soccer action on Monday afternoon in Upper Lake.

Upper Lake moves to 3-8 in league play and 5-9 overall with the victory. The Cougars got the early jump on the Braves while building a 3-0 halftime lead.

“They were passing from the beginning of the game,” Upper Lake coach Daniella Santana said of her players.

Besides Mooney’s three goals, Laisha Altimirano scored for the Cougars and assisted on two of Mooney’s goals. Mooney and Ariel Garcia added assists. Garcia’s assist was the first of her Upper Lake career.

Strong play from Upper Lake’s defense and from midfielders Hailey Reams and Anisha Kalan also sparked the Cougars, who have a busy week ahead with road games Wednesday against Credo and Friday against Roseland University Prep.

“We’re getting some of our girls back from injuries and that helps,” Santana said.

Upper Lake’s defense allowed only two shots on goal in the first half.
