LAKE COUNTY >> While Lake County’s high school volleyball and soccer teams got an unexpected week off because of the fires raging throughout the North Coast and the resulting unhealthy air quality, all of them should be back in action next week unless Mother Nature has other plans.
Two of those teams — the Kelseyville High School varsity volleyball club and the Middletown High School girls soccer squad — are looking to extend long winning streaks that date back several seasons. Middletown is 8-0 and gunning for a 10th straight North Central League I championship. Kelseyville is also 8-0 and taking aim on a third consecutive NCL I crown and its fourth in five seasons.
Kelseyville, coached by Donelle McCallister, has won 42 straight times in league play and hasn’t lost since Oct. 16, 2014. If the Knights beat Middletown at home on Tuesday their winning streak will be more than three calendar years long.
Middletown, coached by Lamont Kucer, has gone undefeated (24-0-3) in its last 27 league games, a streak that began in 2015 when Amy Emerson was Middletown’s coach. The Mustangs can extend that streak to 28 with a tie or win Tuesday in Kelseyville.
Kelseyville volleyball and Middletown girls soccer share another thing in common besides their long string of success in league play. The last team to beat them is the same school – St. Helena. While the Saints don’t pose much of a threat in volleyball this season, their girls soccer team is right behind Middletown in the NCL I standings at 7-1.
