PLEASANTON >> Safeway and other stores owned by The Albertsons Companies have launched a quest to raise money for victims of the wildfires that have scorched Northern California’s wine country, the retailers said Wednesday.
Grocery customers can make donations at check stands of the Safeway, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions store locations in California and northern Nevada, according to Albertsons Companies Foundation.
“We have a longstanding history serving California,” said Christy Duncan Anderson, executive director of the foundation. “We’re committed to helping our neighbors during this crisis.”
Pleasanton-based Safeway’s Northern California division is working with the Red Cross to donate tractor-trailers to deliver food to help evacuation shelters, as well as to store food for the assistance centers.
The foundation said it would match customer donations up to a total of $500,000.
The money is being used to help disaster relief organizations including the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from the fires.
“We know the needs are great and we want to make a meaningful impact to help people recover,” Anderson said.
