LAKE COUNTY >> Effective immediately, Mt. Konocti County Park, Konocti Regional Trails and Highland Springs Recreational Area are reopening to the public.

“The weather has now changed, and we are happy to report that the beauty and outdoor adventure these parks offer can once again be enjoyed by all,” said Lake County’s Deputy Administrative Officer Matthew T. Rothstein in a prepared statement on Friday afternoon.

County Supervisor Rob Brown had explained earlier in the weekthat the two parks were originally shut down because they could have been impacted by the Sulphur Fire. Park closures were also ordered for the Clayton and Valley Fires.

Only parks that could have been impacted were closed.

Endorsing the decision to keep the parks shuttered until Friday, Sheriff Brian Martin said if something were to happen in either of these parks, response would be more difficult than in other county properties.

Martin added that he would not want someone to be recreating in either of the parks and be trapped there due to a fire. Fire or Police staff would have difficulty getting there because resources are being used elsewhere.

Many staff members of Mt. Konocti and Highland Springs live outside of the county and were dealing with regional fires. They have now regained access to homes, in many cases.

“Thank you to County residents for understanding and observing recent park closures due to adverse weather conditions and wildfire risk,” Rothstein said in announcing the reopening.
