ST. HELENA >> The St. Helena Saints did something to Middletown on Tuesday afternoon that no other North Central League I school has been able to accomplish in girls soccer since Oct. 21, 2015, and that is beat the Mustangs.
St. Helena defeated Middletown 1-0 in St. Helena to improve to 8-1 in league play. Middletown is now 10-1 and 15-3-2 overall. The Saints lost four league games off their league schedule because of the North Coast fires that struck on Oct. 8 and they won’t be able to make up all of them before Saturday, which is the last day of the regular season. Middletown also has two makeup games because of those same fires along with a contest Thursday at home against Lower Lake.
Middletown will finish no worse than a co-champion as long at it doesn’t suffer another league loss. That would give the Mustangs a 10th straight season of winning at least part of the league title.
St. Helena also was the last team to beat Middletown before Tuesday’s contest. The Saints won 4-3 two years ago at St. Helena. The Mustangs blanked the Saints 2-0 in their first meeting this season, that on Sept. 28 in Middletown.
No other game details were reported to the Record-Bee.
In other soccer action Tuesday:
Clear Lake 4, Kelseyville 1
At Lakeport, Tianna Jardstrom scored two more goals, giving her seven in the last two games, and the Clear Lake Cardinals knocked off the Kelseyville Knights in NCL I play.
The two teams were tied 1-1 at halftime. Nicole Duncan’s goal, assisted by Kortnie Reynolds, put the Cardinals (8-4-1, 11-7-1) ahead to stay 11 minutes into the second half. Carina Martinez scored a few minutes later to make it a 3-1 game and Jardstrom’s second goal of the day, assisted by Reynolds, pushed that lead to 4-1.
“Our defense held well and our forwards were doing what they needed to do,” Clear Lake coach Tommy Burke said.
Regina Faalalea’s play in the midfield also helped propel the Cardinals, according to Burke.
Clear Lake wraps up its league and regular-season schedule Thursday at home against Cloverdale.
Kelseyville (4-7, 6-9) is home Wednesday to play St. Helena.
