LOWER LAKE >> A Clearlake man died when his car left the road and hit a tree on Tuesday afternoon. Investigators have not released the victim’s name, pending notification of next of kin.

According to California Highway Patrol reports, the incident occurred shortly after a Ford pickup turned onto Highway 53 in Lower Lake, heading north. Juan Ramirez, also of Clearlake, entered the road near Anderson Marsh. The victim was also northbound and ended up directly behind Ramirez’ vehicle.

The two vehicles ended up side by side, still heading north toward Clearlake. As they passed the intersection of Anderson Ranch Parkway, the victim apparently lost control of his Toyota.

Investigators say the victim’s car veered to off the road on the east side, rolled and slammed into a tree.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Responders reported the victim was wearing a safety belt. Ramirez, who was unhurt, was also restrained.

Although the CHP investigation of the incident is ongoing, officers say neither driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. There were no arrests made at the scene.
