CLEARLAKE >> The City of Clearlake approves the second reading of the new Commercial Use Marijuana Ordinance and the updated Marijuana Dispensary Ordinance.

Now that the two ordinances had their second reading approved by the City Council, Clearlake can maintain local regulation over cannabis businesses that come into the area when the new law goes into effect on January 1.

City Manager Greg Folsom said some highlights of the ordinance are creating a commercial cannabis overlay zone, allowing up to 12 cannabis business to use permits, and the creation of general operating requirements. Penalties of up to $1,000 per day and a development agreement would also be required.

Clearlake Mayor Russ Perdock said the production of this ordinance had been revised thoroughly by various city departments and committees to create the best possible fit and regulated ordinance.

“The black market is going to continue and that’s just the way it is unfortunately,” Perdock said. “But this, I think, is a step in trying to regulate it. And it is a method, in my opinion, in cleaning up, to make our city a safer city, to make it a more beautiful city and a cleaner smelling city.”
