A Cal Fire crew fighting the Mendocino Lake Complex Fire in Redwood Valley reported that a man shot at them while they were parked on his property, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

The Cal Fire crew’s engine was parked on property in the 10000 block of West Road, owned by John Maxwell Heron, 73, on the night of Oct. 13, when they heard a man shouting at them from the house and then heard gunshots coming from where he was. The crew left quickly and called law enforcement.

MCSO and several other agencies that had been patrolling the area for the fire responded just after midnight on Oct. 14. While they were investigating, Heron called 911 to report intruders on his property and told the operator that he had shot his gun.

Heron was found by officers in front of his house and reportedly resisted arrest. He was booked into county jail on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner and resisting an officer, held under $15,000 bail.
