LAKE COUNTY >> Lake County officials made a presentation declaring the month of November as Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and Honoring Eva Johnson as the founder of the Adult Day Care Program.

Approximately 1,300 Lake County residents suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The Adult Day Care Program provides a day care for those affected, training, consultations, information and referrals to places where people can get help.

Johnson started the program over 20 years ago after her husband was diagnosed with the disease. It was then she created a support group. There are now three programs around the county that are operated by people from this group.

“With that came the idea that we needed a day care, but in rural counties they didn’t have it,” Johnson said. “It really takes a village to do all this. Many, many people formed a task force and out of all this we started a program one day a week.”

A day will be held to honor her at Running Creek in Upper Lake on Monday at 4 p.m.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive condition that erodes cognitive and functional abilities and leaves a person to be completely dependent.
