MIDDLETOWN >> When you lead a team to a 10th straight North Central League I girls soccer championship, you’re doing something right.
Middletown High School senior Aly Ferguson, recently named the co-most valuable player on the 2017 All-NCL I team as selected by the league’s coaches, did all she could do to bring another league title to the Middletown gym rafters. The Mustangs finished 12-1 in the league standings to St. Helena’s 8-1 this season, but because the Saints were unable to make up games they lost because of nearby fires that ravaged the North Coast in early October, Coastal Mountain Conference officials determined both teams would share the title, especially since they split their two league meetings, each winning at home.
Middletown finished 17-4-2 overall and Ferguson, who shares this year’s MVP award with St. Helena senior Isabelle Ortiz, led the Mustangs in goals scored with 31 while also dishing out 10 assists, which was second on the team behind teammate Sophie Kucer.
Ferguson was one of eight Middletown players honored, the most by any team on this year’s All-League squad.
Named to the All-League first team from Middletown were freshman Kucer, junior Kassi Agapoff and senior Gracie Armstrong. Other Lake County players drawing first-team honors were Clear Lake senior Brooklyn Jenkins and Kelseyville junior Kat Brown.
Five Lake County players were among those honored on the All-League second team. They were Clear Lake seniors Regina Faalelea and Lexi Burke, Kelseyville senior Daniela Gonzalez, and Middletown juniors Julisa Garcia and Kelsey Lemoine.
Among those receiving honorable mentions were Middletown sophomore Abby Sabater, Middletown junior Ellie Bazzano, Clear Lake seniors Carina Martinez and Nicole Duncan, and Kelseyville sophomore Cassidy Griffin.
