UPPER LAKE >> Lower Lake High School came away with eight medals and Middletown brought home seven more from the Coastal Mountain Conference Novice Tournament on Saturday at Upper Lake Middle School.

Medals were awarded to the top three finishers in each division of the Novice, a tournament designed for first-year high school wrestlers, junior varsity wrestlers and varsity wrestlers with limited experience.

Lower Lake secured three first-place medals and Middletown two. Lower Lake’s firsts went to 120-pounder Julius Brown, who won all three of his matches by pin; 152-pound Dahsaan Booker, who went 3-0 with two pins; and heavyweight Willie Mason, who went 3-0 with three pins. For Middletown, Filemon Sanchez went undefeated (3-0) at 113 pounds and Angela Egger dominated the field in the girls 116-pound bracket.

Second-place medals went to Lower Lake’s Kenya Atrisco, 1-1 with one pin in the 106-pound girls division; David Burke, 2-1 with two pins, his only loss to teammate Brown in the finals at 120 pounds; and Kyle Lynn, 2-1 with two pins at 145 pounds. For Middletown, Evan Dodd finished second at 160 pounds.

Third-place medals went to Lower Lake’s Ian Hutton, 1-2 with one pin at 182 pounds, and to Brian Sanchez, 1-2 with one pin at 197 pounds. For Middletown, Dorian Smith (126) and Hagan Cadwallader (132) medaled in the boys division while Leslie Chairez (131) and Arianna Forest (143) medaled in the girls division.

“We took 14 to Novice so eight medals isn’t too bad,” Lower Lake coach Ed Fuchs said.

Added Middletown coach Brian Hunt, who sent 10 Mustangs to Novice, “We had a strong showing for bringing a small group. Angela dominated all of her matches and Filemon is a first-year wrestler and went 3-0 on the day.”

Lower Lake sent eight of its more experienced wrestlers to the Faultline Duals on Saturday in Larkspur and while the Trojans couldn’t put a full team on the mat, they still placed eighth out of 12 teams. In their three pool matches, they beat Stuart Hall 42-15, lost to Sacred Heart 36-18 and lost to Northgate 42-31. Later in the competition they beat Alhambra 34-33 and lost 38-34 to Campolindo.

“We received all positive feedback from the other coaches, who were impressed how well we did despite giving up forfeits in all of those matches,” Fuchs said.

Mario Cuellar, a freshman, went 5-0 with two pins at 106 pounds while Carlos Avelar went 5-0 with four pins at 160 pounds. Also going undefeated was Michael Jamison (3-0 with two pins) in the heavyweight division.

Tristan Day had a solid outing as well, going 4-1 with four pins at 126 pounds. Hugo Salazar went 3-2 with one pin at 132 pounds and Pedro Garrido, another freshman, went 2-2 with two pins at 120 pounds.

Also for the Trojans, Corey Parker went 2-3 with two pins at 145 pounds and Adam DeLeon went 1-3 with one pin at 138 pounds.
