At Antioch, Kassi Agapoff buried a jump shot late in the fourth quarter and freshman post Emily Santiago sank two pressure-packed free throws down the stretch as the Middletown Mustangs held off Vacaville to clinch third place in the Antioch Tournament.

Middletown (3-1) had a 12-point lead midway through the third quarter, but the Mustangs couldn’t avoid foul trouble and Vacaville quickly worked its way into the double bonus. The Bulldogs made the most of it, too, sinking 20 of 22 free throws in the second half.

“They had only three baskets in the second half,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said. “Everything else was free throws.”

Middletown led 14-11 after one quarter and 27-19 at halftime. Vacaville closed to 39-36 after three quarters.

Agapoff finished with 14 points and was named to the All-Tournament team. Santiago added 11 points and Alyssa Hart had seven.

“All in all I was pretty satisfied with the way we played,” Bazzano said.

In the winner’s semifinal round on Friday, Middletown lost 50-17 to eventual tournament champion Acalanes.

“That’s a tough program,” Bazzano said of the Lafayette school. “They got all over us on defense. They’re big and physical. They just physically wore us down.”

Ellie Bazzano’s five points paced the Mustangs.

Middletown plays at Fairfield on Tuesday.
