FAIRFIELD >> Balanced scoring and a stingy defense until the final minutes of the game added up to a 50-35 non-league victory over Fairfield for the Middletown High School varsity girls basketball team on Tuesday night in Fairfield.
Middletown improved to 4-1 with its second win this season over Fairfield, a team the Mustangs beat 38-35 on Thursday in the opening round of the Antioch Tournament.
“We took care of the ball a lot better than the last time we played against these guys,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said. “I was pretty happy with the way we played.”
Despite a slow start – Middletown led just 6-2 after one quarter – the Mustangs got it going in the second period.
“We didn’t start very well but we turned it on in the second quarter,” Bazzano said. “Actually the third quarter was our best quarter. We played well on both ends.”
Middletown led 26-12 at halftime and 39-17 through three quarters.
Kassi Agapoff, one of three Mustangs to score in double figures, led the way with 13 points. Ellie Bazzano added 11 points and Hanna Morris had 10.
“Kassi played a very good game,” Bazzano said. “Ellie went 5-for-5 at the free-throw line.”
Alyssa Hart and Emily Santiago added six points apiece.
“I’m happy with where we’re at right now, but we need to stay on task,” Bazzano said. “We’ll need to play better Thursday night (at home) against Casa Grande.”
Middletown also won the junior varsity game (the score wasn’t reported).
