KELSEYVILLE >> Katlyn Minnis drew a start for the Upper Lake Cougars on Thursday morning against the Round Valley Warriors in the opening round of the Stokes Tournament, and the junior guard made the most of it.
Minnis scored 10 points, seven of them during a two-minute span in the first quarter, and also dished out a team-best eight assists as the Cougars beat Round Valley 44-13. They’ll play Kelseyville in the winner’s semifinal round on Friday at Kelseyville High School. Tip-off is 11 a.m.
“For the first four minutes it was 0-0, so I called a timeout,” Upper Lake co-coach Dani Paige Gudmundson Pena said. “I told them to relax because they looked a little frazzled out there. I told them to work on making a good pass and take the shot if you have one.”
Minnis responded by scoring seven points in a row. Upper Lake (6-2) led 10-0 after the opening period and never looked back. The Cougars had a 26-4 advantage by halftime.
“She really did a good job,” Gudmundson Pena said of Minnis.
Cheyanne Obedoza added 10 points and six assists while Brenna Sanchez finished with a team-high 12 points.
The Stokes Tournament runs through Saturday.
