LAYTONVILLE >> A Lake County man was killed over the weekend when his vehicle left Highway 101 near Laytonville and hit a tree, the California Highway Patrol reported.
According to the CHP, the 61-year-old Upper Lake man was driving a 1994 Jeep Wrangler south on Highway 101 around mile marker 72 near Laytonville on Sunday morning. Just after 11 a.m., his vehicle veered to the left and into oncoming traffic.
The Jeep then drove onto the highway shoulder and down an embankment before colliding with a tree. The driver, who was wearing his seatbelt, was declared dead at the scene.
There were no passengers in the vehicle and no other vehicles involved.
Authorities have yet to determine what caused the sudden turn into traffic. The collision is under investigation, the CHP reports, and the name of the driver was withheld so his family could be notified.
The Laytonville Fire Department, Cal Fire and the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
