LAKEPORT >> Lakeport announced a new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem for 2018.
With a unanimous vote, Mireya Turner was named Mayor by the Lakeport City Council. She said that she is excited to continue working with the residents of the city and businesses to make Lakeport the best it can be.
“It is a great honor to serve our diverse city as Mayor,” Turner said.
Turner’s spot as Mayor Pro Tem will be filled by council member Tim Barnes. He was also named unanimously for the position.
Barnes said he has had great pleasure working with the council and is looking forward to continuing through this next year.
“I want to thank the staff for everything that they have done over the past year, and I really mean that. Everybody fits where they’re supposed to be and they have done a great job,” Barnes said.
“I feel it has been well thought out and we are sitting up here and doing something that will make the people who elected us proud as we go forward and try to represent everyone,” Barnes added.
Outgoing Mayor Stacy Mattina told the council it has been a pleasure serving the city and there was no greater honor then saying you’re the Mayor of the City of Lakeport.
“I am so proud of our city, and I am so proud of our council and thank you for having me. We have got a lot done and I look forward to another year of being busy and getting projects done,” Mattina said.
Facing the new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem, as well as the rest of the council, are several important issues. The city is completing a marijuana ordinance and working on the Lakefront Revitalization Plan.
Turner said another goal she is looking forward to work on is the development of a broadband network.
“One top priority is supporting development of a robust broadband network. Fast, reliable internet is crucial to our businesses, students, law enforcement and medical community,” Turner said. “One role of government is to provide infrastructure that will enable our community to thrive. Broadband development is one example of how we can support our city.”
Road improvement, attracting new businesses and annexation are also on the table.
“Another is the annexation of South Main Street. Businesses and residents have been waiting for years for a reliable, affordable water supply for home and business use, including fire protection. I look forward to meeting these vital needs through the annexation process,” Turner said.
