CLEARLAKE >> In 1942 eight ladies formed a group who met in each other’s homes as a Book of the Month Club. During World War II, gas rationing limited travel, so discussions of topics such as the arts, music, drama and civic improvements occurred to bring interest and culture into their lives in the home setting.

The Club incorporated as a non-profit in 1947 and soon joined the California Federation of Women’s Clubs. Today it continues its affiliation with the CFWC Sutter District, with visits and input one to the other, on a regular basis.

Three of the original members purchased lakefront properties and donated the land to the Club. This gift was sold and the monies used to purchase the present site of the Park Study Club on Santa Clara Avenue in Clearlake. It is one of a handful of clubs owned by women in this country. With labor provided by husbands, the building was occupied and dedicated in September 1959.

Due to the hard work and commitment of these founding members, a campaign was spearheaded for a County Library. In 1967 the idea was put on the ballot and the County Library in Clearlake became a reality.

Seventy-five plus years later, the Park Study Club remains a non-profit organization with a commitment to community services. The members are especially dedicated to raising funds for graduating seniors, the Hugh O’Brian Foundation, Hospice, local k-9 units, Clearlake Senior and Community Center, the Austin Park flag, and community tragedies such as victims of the devastating fires in Lake County.

The Park Study Club is proud of its civic-minded members who make a difference for the citizens. Be a part of its success and join them for an evening worth remembering on March 10.
