KELSEYVILLE >> The first 2018 Window to the Universe evening will feature Taylor lecturer Tim Gill, returning to the Taylor lectern for his fifth talk.

The event will take place Saturday, January 27 from 7:20 — 10:30 p.m. With the schedule divided as:

7:20 Planetarium — “From Earth to the Universe,” Eduardo Alatorre

8:00 Introduction: Bill Haddon, Pres. Friends of Taylor Observatory. What’s Up at Taylor for 2018

8:10 Lecture — Infinity and Astronomy

9:00 Planetarium — Second showing

9:00-10:30 — Telescope viewing (Taylor Staff)

The topic this month, “Infinity and Astronomy,” is right up Gill’s alley, given his career in teaching math.

In preparation for the event, the Taylor Observatory poses the questions and explanation:

Is the universe infinite? What does this question mean?

To fully understand the question of an infinite universe, one must have an understanding of infinity as a mathematical construct. This talk will describe the mathematics of infinity and how this applies to an infinite universe. If there are clear skies, attendees will have the chance to enjoy telescopic views of the Orion Nebula and other stellar delights on their new Taylor Observatory Star Deck. Additionally, a custom-made telescope will also be available for use.

Solar system expert Eduardo Alatorre is said to return on Saturday.

On February 24 a talk on Near Earth Objects (NEO’s) by Bill Haddon, highlighting the new ATLAS advanced NEO warning system in Hawaii is scheduled.

On March 24 renowned lunar expert and lunar photographer Robert Reeves will visit from Texas, arranged by FOTO board member Tom Schleif.
