Transfiguration Sunday

UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SERVICES, CLEARLAKE, CLEARLAKE OAKS AND POTTER VALLEY

Pastor Dawn-Karen Roberts

At the Clearlake Oaks location, this Transfiguration Sunday, we will reflect on Mark 9:2-9. We celebrate this important time in the life of Jesus when he requests that Peter, James and John go with him into a secluded area in the mountains, wherein his raiment became exceedingly white and Elias and Moses appeared and were talking with Jesus. And there is so much more revealed in this wondrous scripture. From this day forward, Jesus focused on … “till the Son of man were risen from the dead.”

Marion Kaiser will also speak briefly regarding a Meditation/Yoga class to take place during February in our Clearlake Oaks community room.

We invite our readers to come visit with us and pray with us at one of the following locations:

Join our Clearlake and Clearlake Oaks congregations in the United Methodist Church, 12487 The Plaza, Clearlake Oaks, for midday worship service each Sunday at noon.

You may also join our Potter Valley United Methodist Church, 10075 Main Street, Potter Valley, at 9 a.m. for Scouting Sunday. The United Methodist Men, are officially the sponsors all scouting programs in The United Methodist Church. It is an opportunity for units to participate in the religious service of their chartering organization by attending services in uniform, conducting a flag ceremony, and speaking about Scouting,

Our churches have brief services scheduled for Ash Wednesday, February 14, as follows: Clearlake Church 12 p.m., The Oaks 2 p.m.. Potter Valley 7 p.m.

Talking about love

Galilee Lutheran Church

Lay leaders Kris Andre and Debra Blum

You may not usually think of the Bible as being sexy and cutting-edge (after all, it’s thousands of years old). But there is one book in the Old Testament which, for its content, might be rated R. In fact, it never shows up in our Bible readings on Sunday, which we call the Lectionary.

“The Song of Songs,” also known as “The Song of Solomon,” is a love dialogue between a young man and woman who are infatuated with each other. Coincidentally, this Sunday falls just before Valentine’s Day, so talking about love seems particularly appropriate at this time.

When we read “The Song of Songs” last year in our Tuesday night Bible Study, it made a big splash and inspired the comment, “We should have a sermon on this some day.” Kris Andre took up the challenge and will present her thoughts on Sunday morning at 10:00 am. Why on earth was this book included in the Old Testament? What does it mean? Can we talk about it in church?

By the way, St. Valentine was a Christian bishop who made a habit of throwing bags of money into the yards of poor women who could not afford a dowry, which was required for getting married. He became the patron saint of True Love, which as we know, conquers all.

And Wednesday at 7 p.m., we’ll be having our annual Ash Wednesday service with the “imposition of ashes.” This is the beginning of the Lenten season, which ends with Easter on April 1.

So join us this Sunday and hear about love in church. Galilee Lutheran Church is located fetchingly at 8860 Soda Bay Road in the Kelseyville Rivieras. In addition to love, we also offer free parking and hot coffee.

PRAYER VIGIL AND ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE

The Upper Lake Community United Methodist church, 604 Clover Valley Road, Upper Lake, will have its annual prayer vigil from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Ash Wednesday, February 14. Anyone wishing to may come and pray during these hours. The Ash Wednesday service will commence at 4:30 p.m. This service, in the light of God’s redeeming love in Jesus Christ, helps us to confront our own mortality and confess our sins before God within the community of faith. The service will end with the imposition of ashes at which time Pastor Bob Green will make the sign of the cross, from the ashes of last year’s palm branches, on the forehead of each person. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Christian worship and the Imposition of Ashes can be a powerful nonverbal way of participating in that call. After the Imposition of Ashes we will sing the hymn “It’s Me, It’s Me, O Lord” standing in the need of prayer.

All are welcome to join in the Ash Wednesday service as well as our regularly scheduled Sunday service at 11 a.m.

Our church motto is “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors”, passion for Christ, compassion for All.
