Although there’s no immediate need for an umbrella, don’t pack those winter jackets away just yet.
A cold snap is expected to deliver mostly freezing overnight low temperatures across the area beginning Sunday night, as well as cold and windy daytime conditions to begin the work week.
By Monday afternoon, temperatures in Lake County and around Northern California will struggle to break into the mid-50s, with slightly warmer numbers in the Bay Area, according to the National Weather Service. Tuesday will bring much of the same.
This will be “the first real shot of cold air we’ve seen this year,” said Matt Mehle, a meteorologist with the weather service.
Before the cold snap, temperatures Saturday are expected to reach 70 degrees in some locations, with Accuweather calling for 67 in Lakeport. February began with a string of record-setting daily temperatures in the Bay Area. But forecast highs for Monday include 50 in Lakeport, rising slightly across the Bay Area to 60 in San Jose, 55 in San Francisco and 56 in Oakland.
High temperatures around Lake County will flutter between 50 and 55 through Wednesday, according to Accuweather. Overnight, the thermometer will dip into the upper 20s.
“We went from one extreme, and now we’re going to the other,” Mehle said.
Precipitation remains absent from the forecast as the area extends its unwanted streak of days without rain.
Although winter (December-February) dry spells are not uncommon, the Bay Area could be heading into record-setting territory, according to Jan Null, a meteorologist with Golden Gate Weather Service.
