A curious box left on the sidewalk near Starbucks on Perkins Street Sunday led officers to close off the street and call in a bomb squad, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
According to the UPD, a caller at Starbucks in the 700 block of East Perkins Street reported at 10:01 a.m. Sunday that a “suspicious” package had been left on the sidewalk near a light pole.
The box was described as a “blue, gift-wrapped” box near a pole that has directional signs for the hospital and the California Highway Patrol. Unable to determine “why the box had been placed in this manner,” UPD officers closed off Perkins Street at Orchard Avenue and requested that Ukiah Valley Fire Authority personnel respond, as well as members of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad.
The box was eventually discovered to be empty, but officers still do not know who left the box there or why.
