A PRECARIOUS FOOTHOLD
Full Lunar Eclipse
By Lourdes Thuesen
Ash umber of our shadow
a fuzzy cowl filter sliding
to hide the sharp disk of gleaming winter Moon
the smudge that terrified our ancestors
sent them crying
into the cave sand shacks and huts
despairing of morning.
This back alley show in a milky galaxy
this speck of drama among a billion cold stars
Our tiny sphere
smaller than a smear of fly on a window pane
enhousing us from the frigid dark
Even our lovely sturdy Moon
dissolves in the smudged blackness
of the western hills.
And I—
of beating heart
network of tissue and nerve
and bone and humors of loves and friendship
work and sorrows—
I
and all those of my kind
All of us—
singly and together—
less than an eyelash
or a shallow breath
the smallest of particles
amid the measureless universe of multiple sowings of stars
and unedged
Time
Salvation in a Salvage Yard
By Jaka
Do you ever have days
when you feel like one of those cars
in an auto dismantler’s yard:
rusted, dented, battery shot,
faulty transmission, leaking oil
just non functional,
a total loss?
Scheduled to be crushed, compressed, flattened,
separated into fragments and pieces,
parts here, parts there . . .
ready to be transformed, recycled into another use:
perhaps, a shovel, a stove pipe,
a turbo charged engine or maybe even,
an integral part of an architectural wonder
celebrated, admired, placed on a list
of sights to see.
After this incarnation-variation revelation:
Do you sense a change?
A sense of purpose?
Thought recycled, feeling renewed?
Well then,
get the hell going, decide what’s next.
With motor running, mirror adjusted,
vision shifted, spirit revved . . .
the wheel is yours.
