UPPER LAKE >> Kenny Hodges certainly filled up the stat sheet for the Upper Lake Cougars during a successful varsity boys basketball campaign in 2017-18.
The junior, who should top 1,000 career points early next season and break the school record for most career points by a boy, averaged 19.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.4 steals and 2.1 blocks per game for the 18-9 Cougars. Those kind of eye-popping numbers didn’t go unnoticed by his own coach, Justin Dutcher, or by the other coaches in the North Central League II who recently voted Hodges onto the All-League first team.
Hodges and his senior teammate, Colton Goetjen, were the two Upper Lake players honored on the 2018 All-NCL II team. Goetjen, the Cougars’ top rebounder and a double-double threat most games (he averaged 8.6 points a game), was honored on the All-League second team.
Roseland University Prep’s Gilbert Jimenz, a senior, was named the league’s MVP. Joining Upper Lake’s Hodges on the first team were Roseland University Prep sophomore Miguel Figueroa, Rincon Valley Christian senior Charlie Segale, Sonoma Academy senior Oscar McCauley, and Technology senior Calvin Jenkins.
Second-team players were Upper Lake’s Goetjen, Sonoma Academy junior Chance Golbert, Roseland Collegiate Prep senior Andy Martinez, Technology senior Max Orloff, and Rincon Valley Christian junior Liam Wickenburg.
Honorable mentions went to Credo junior Eric Barton, Tomales junior Andy Azevedo, Roseland University Prep junior Mikey Ornelas, Sonoma Academy junior Mario Della Santina, and Technology senior John Hirsch.
Girls
Upper Lake’s girls slugged their way through an 11-15 rebuilding season and the team’s top player, senior post Brenna Sanchez, earned All-League second-team honors. She was the only Cougar player to land a spot on the All-League team.
League co-MVP honors went to Sonoma Academy senior Lauren Reed and Rincon Valley Christian junior Caroline Chambers. Honored on the first team were Rincon Valley Christian senior Kylie Olson, Sonoma Academy’s Lizbeth Castillo (sophomore) and Tristen Sherley (senior), and St. Vincent sophomore Alessandra Ditzio.
Second-team honors went to Upper Lake’s Sanchez, Rincon Valley Christian sophomore Elizabeth Chambers, Tomas sophomore Isabel Sartori, Credo senor Emma Steyn, and Sonoma Academy senior Gabrielle Tukman.
Receiving honorable mentions were St. Vincent senior Clare Galten, Roseland University Prep’s Gaby Villalobos (junior) and Jocelyn Jimenez (junior), Credo freshman Katrina Yardley, and Sonoma Academy senior Mardi Rodgers.
