The cold and relentless storms that have rolled in from Alaska and Western Canada this week have so far dumped 5 to 6 feet of new snow in many places across California’s Sierra Nevada Range, a much-needed respite from the bone-dry conditions of February, and a boost to the state’s summer water supply.
From Thursday morning through Saturday morning, the National Weather Service reported the following impressive totals:
June Mountain (near Mammoth): 96 inches
Squaw Valley: 68 inches
Kirkwood: 67 inches
Homewood: 66 inches
Sierra-at-Tahoe: 63 inches
Mammoth Mountain: 62 inches
Mount Rose: 57 inches
Heavenly: 54 inches
Northstar: 52 inches
Diamond Peak: 31 inches
South Lake Tahoe: 34 inches
Tahoe City: 30 inches
Farther south, Yosemite National Park also was blanketed in snow, with motorists on Highway 120 requiring chains.
