BUCKINGHAM >> Hail couldn’t stop the Clear Lake High School golf team from winning its second straight Coastal Mountain Conference North match on Wednesday afternoon. Behind Mike Camacho’s low round of 106, the Cardinals beat Willits 455-472 at Buckingham Golf and Country Club.

Point Arena came in third with 506 and Fort Bragg was incomplete (fewer than four golfers).

“There were times when it hailed for five minutes,” Clear Lake coach Ted Mattila said. “It halted play for a bit.”

Fort Bragg’s Clay Anderson fired the low round of the day, a 102 on the par-72 Buckingham course, but Camacho was closed behind. Clear Lake’s other low rounds went to Brenden Allen (112), Jared Scott (118) and Sierra Powers (119).

In the CMC North opener for both teams on March 7 at Little River Golf Course on the Mendocino County coast, Clear Lake defeated Fort Bragg 480-489. Willits came in third with 501 while Point Arena was unable to attend.

Clear Lake’s Allen fired the low round, a 113, while teammate Camacho was two shots back at 115. Powers finished at 121 and Angel Gonzales carded a 131.

“It rained hard the last seven holes,” Mattila said. “Those were tough playing conditions.”

Clear Lake shoots for a third straight victory when CMC North play resumes March 22 at Brooktrails Golf Course near Willits.
