PETALUMA >> Cut from 18 to nine holes because of the threat of lightning, the golf teams that make up the Coastal Mountain Conference South didn’t have much fun playing in a steady and sometimes pouring rain on Thursday afternoon at Rooster Run in Petaluma.

“The weather was horrible,” Kelseyville golf John Berry of the CMC South’s season opener. “It rained the whole time, quite hard for a while. There were puddles everywhere.”

And since puddles and electricity don’t mix, the decision was made to halt play after nine holes because of the proximity of lighting to the Petaluma area.

“It was nine miles west of us,” Berry said. “They were minutes away from sounding the horn (that clears the course if lightning is threatening).”

Defending South champion St. Vincent won the round with a score of 169, Middletown edged out Kelseyville for second place 207-209, St. Helena was fourth with 222, Credo of Rohnert Park came in fifth with 271, and Geyserville, Technology and Stony Point all were incomplete.

Low individual honors went to St. Vincent’s Justin Peck with a 4-over-par 40. Kelseyville’s Matt Wotherspoon was next at 42, Geyserville’s Carson Kalbfleisch came in third at 46, and Middletown’s Derek Coulter was fourth with 48.

Also for Middletown, Quentin Crayne carded a 50, Andrew Martz had 53 and Christian Hicks finished at 56.

Along with Wotherspoon’s 42, Kelseyville scoring leaders were Dylan Escobedo at 52, Michael Beverlin at 54, and Lalo Sepulveda at 61.

The CMC South golfers return to action Wednesday at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park.
