REDWOOD VALLEY >> Elijah Alvarez had a big afternoon Saturday for the Terrace Middle School wrestling team at the Eagle Peak Tournament in Redwood Valley.
Alvarez not only went 2-0 with one pin to win the 124-pound junior varsity boys division, but he was honored with the Kai Shepherd Memorial Sportsmanship Award, which was voted on by all the participating coaches. Shepherd lost his life in the Redwood Valley fire last October.
Alvarez wasn’t the only Terrace School wrestler who brought home a medal. In the varsity girls division, Ashley Pyorre won the 103-pound division with a 2-0 record that featured two pins. Hernan Romero also came away with a first-place medal, going 3-0 with two pins in the 116-pound JV boys division.
Finishing second was Hayden Fowler with a 2-1 record in the 110-pound varsity boys division. His only loss came to the wrestler who was named the tournament’s outstanding lightweight.
Third-place medals went to Liam Davis in the 130-pound boys varsity division even though he had to pull out of the tournament with an injured elbow, and to Luis Aguilar in the 93-pound JV boys division.
