WILLITS >> Clear Lake opened up an early 4-0 lead only to come out on the wrong end of 9-5 decision to the Willits Wolverines in North Central League I varsity baseball action on Wednesday afternoon in Willts.

“We’re not playing very good defense … very good baseball at the moment,” Clear Lake assistant coach John Garrison said of another sloppy day in the field by the Cardinals, who committed six errors.

Clear Lake (0-3 league, 3-6 overall) scored a run in the top of the first inning and added three more runs in the second for a 4-0 lead.

“We had a chance to put them away and missed some opportunities,” Garrison said.

Willits (2-1, 6-5) didn’t make the same mistake. The Wolverines closed to 4-2 with single runs in the third and fourth innings before pushing ahead 5-4 during a three-run fifth. Clear Lake tied the game at 5 in the top of the sixth, but the Wolverines rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning.

“Errors are costing and extending innings,” Garrison said. “We also walked to many hitters. Giving up free bases doesn’t give you a good chance to win a game.”

Kyle Davis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Clear Lake while Preston Jones went 2-for-3 with a double. Alex Adams (1-for-4) drove in a pair of runs.

The Cardinals can snap their six-game losing streak on Tuesday when they host St. Helena in a league game at 4 p.m.
