LAKE COUNTY >> Lake County scholar-athletes Aly Ferguson of Middletown High School and Nick Warner of Upper Lake High School have been honored by the North Coast Section as 2018 recipients of the Foundation Scholarship.
The section recently released a list of 21 Foundation Scholarship winners, four of whom are members of Coastal Mountain Conference teams. Besides Ferguson and Warner, Gilda Rojas of Calistoga High School and Lauren Nunes of Tomales High School were honored.
Ferguson and Warner will receive $1,000 scholarships that they can used toward tuition, fees and book costs at the college of their choice.
Only seniors are eligible for the Foundation Scholarship, which recognizes and rewards student-athletes who balance academic achievement with athletic participation as well as service to the community. Seniors must be in good standing with their school, have a GPA of 3.3 or higher, participate in at least one varsity sport, demonstrate a commitment to his/her school through leadership or social service, and demonstrate a commitment to community through volunteer activities.
Ferguson, a four-year varsity veteran, helped lead Middletown to a 10th straight North Central League I championship during the 2017 fall sports season and was voted co-MVP on the All-League team. She is also a standout member of the school’s softball team, which is off to its best league start in years.
Warner started at guard and defensive tackle for Upper Lake’s football team and was a team captain for the Cougars, who went 6-2 last season, including a 4-1 record in the NCL III North. Off the playing field, Warner was a boys state representative, a member of the school’s robotics team, and the student representative to the Upper Lake Unified School District board.
