LOWER LAKE >> One day after committing six errors in a league loss to the Clear Lake Cardinals, the Lower Lake Trojans were looking for a better effort from their defense against non-league opponent Healdsburg, a team that brought a 2-10 record to the Lower Lake High School diamond on Wednesday afternoon.
The Trojans didn’t get it.
Healdsburg broke open a close game with a seven-run fifth inning and rolled to a 14-5 victory that drops Lower Lake’s season record to 4-7.
The Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before Healdsburg pulled even with two runs in the top of the third. The Greyhounds went up 3-2 in the fourth before pulling away in their seven-run fifth, an inning that took three Lower Lake pitchers – starter Joe Boyd and relievers Bobby Cruz and Gavin Watson – to navigate. Boyd took the loss after 4 1/3 innings on the mound.
Lower Lake avoided the 10-run rule by scoring its final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Izzac Carver went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to spark the Trojans at the plate. JT Tinkler (2-for-4) also had a double. Cruz, Antonio Padilla, Gabe Padilla and Andrew Smith had Lower Lake’s other hits.
With two starting pitchers out of action — one because of a sore arm and the other attending another school-related event — the Trojans head into Cloverdale on Friday to resume their North Central League I schedule at 4 p.m. They are 1-4 in the league standings.
