MIDDLETOWN >> The Middletown Mustangs had no problem finding complete focus on Monday as they battered the Healdsburg Greyhounds 14-0 in a non-league softball game called after 4 ½ innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
“Mondays are hard games to get ready for because you’re coming off the weekend,” Middletown coach Bob Gunion said.
Middletown (8-6) had all three elements of its game working. Winning pitcher Savannah McLaughlin blanked Healdsburg (1-14) on four hits, the defense playing behind her didn’t commit a single error, and the offense wasted no time staking her to a big lead with a six-run bottom of the first.
“It was a good effort defensively,” Gunion said. “We were focused to be consistent today.”
McLaughlin had all of her pitches working while silencing Healdsburg’s bats.
“She was ahead in the count a lot,” Gunion said.
The Mustangs put together an eight-run third inning to put the game out of reach.
Abi Murphy went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to power the Middletown offense and Gracie Armstrong doubled and drove in three runs. Jessica Zell and Makaili Brown both went 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Aly Ferguson and Alle Vierra also drove in runs.
Middletown hosts St. Helena in a North Central League I game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Mustangs are on the road Friday to play Lower Lake.
