Congressional candidate and former Lake County teacher Nils Palsson is hosting a series of campaign events today, Friday, May 4.
Palsson, who is running as an independent for the seat in California’s 5th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives, will host a casual Coffee with the Candidate at Angelina’s Bakery and Espresso in Lakeport at 2 p.m. He will then follow with a Campaign Office Hours and Volunteer Meeting at the Middletown Art Center at 5 p.m.
The candidate will also be on hand for the Middletown Art Center’s monthly Open Mic, which starts at 6:30 pm.
Palsson, 32, worked as a teacher in Lake County school districts and lived in the Cobb Mountain area from 2010 until he was displaced from his home by the 2015 Valley Fire. He was a programmer at KPFZ, Lake County Community Radio, where he was recognized internationally for his emergency response work on the air during the disaster. He also co-founded Transition Lake County and served as a grassroots community organizer for issues related to local food, energy, and economy during his time in Lake County.
Palsson is on the ballot in the June 5th CA Primary Election, where he is challenging ten-term Democratic incumbent Congressman Mike Thompson. He was also a candidate for this seat in 2016 when he placed third in the June Primary with 12.5 percent of the total vote and over 24,000 votes. He is running on a platform of social, racial, environmental and economic justice for all.
“I am just like the rest of the people in my district,” Palsson wrote in a statement. “I’m dealing directly with challenges like student debt and the housing crisis. I know how it feels to be a working-class parent — and I am ready to represent the working-class people of this district in Congress.”
