KELSEYVILLE >> One passenger died, and a driver suffered significant injuries in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 29 early Thursday morning.

According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, the passenger was identified as Rosa Covarrubias, 59, of Kelseyville and the driver as 40-year-old Margarita Garnica-Sanchez of Kelseyville.

Shortly before 5:30 a.m., Garnica-Sanchez, and Covarrubias, in a 2010 Honda Civic, were traveling north on Highway 29, north of Bottle Rock Road at an unknown speed. The driver, CHP said, allowed the vehicle to drift into the southbound lane and then turn the car to the right, causing it to exit the north shoulder.

The Honda then struck an embankment, rolled-over and traveled down into a drainage gully.

Covarrubias was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP reported.

Air ambulance flew Garnica-Sanchez to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

CHP said drugs and alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the collision.
