
LAKE COUNTY >> One of the last big high school sports weekends has arrived and three Lake County teams and seven track and field athletes will be looking to extend their seasons by at least one more week.
Action begins Friday when the Kelseyville High School softball team travels to Alameda to play No. 1 seed St. Joseph Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round of the North Coast Section Division IV playoffs. No. 9 Kelseyville (17-4) needs a win to reach the semifinals on either Tuesday or Wednesday against the winner of a Saturday quarterfinal between Berean Christian of Walnut Creek and Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa. Kelseyville trampled No. 8 seed St. Mary’s of Albany 22-9 in a first-round game on Tuesday.
On Saturday, the No. 1-seeded Middletown High School baseball team hosts El Molino in the quarterfinals of the Division IV playoffs. First pitch, which was originally set for 1 p.m., has been moved to 5 p.m. at Wes Martin Field in Middletown. The Mustangs (18-3) will advance to the semifinals on Wednesday with a victory and would meet the winner of the No. 4 Piedmont vs. No. 5 Arcata quarterfinal, which also takes place Saturday.
Also on Saturday, the No. 3-seeded Clear Lake High School softball team is home to play No. 6 Head-Royce in the quarterfinals of the Division V playoffs. First pitch is 4 p.m. at the Clear Lake High School field in Lakeport. Clear Lake (13-11) needs a victory to reach the semifinals on either Tuesday or Wednesday against the winner of another Saturday quarterfinal between No. 2 seed St. Vincent and No. 7 Making Waves Academy.
While the Kelseyville and Clear Lake softball and Middletown baseball teams are fighting for their playoff lives, Middletown High School athletes Kelsey Lemoine, Amy Herrmann, Taelor Roderick, Hanna Morris and Colton Hall will join Clear Lake’s Paige Woodruff and Lower Lake’s Bryson Trask at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions at Edwards Stadium on the UC Berkeley campus. Action begins Friday and runs through Saturday.
Lemoine (100-meter dash), Herrmann (high jump and pole vault), Roderick (shotput), Morris (discus), Woodruff (pole vault), Hall (discus) and Trask (shotput) need a top-three finish to advance to the CIF State Championships the following weekend in Clovis.
