BERKELEY >> Colton Hall of Middletown High School closed out his high school career by bringing home a fifth-place medal in the discus on Saturday during the final day of the Meet of Champions (MOC) at Edwards Stadium on the UC Berkeley campus.
Hall cleared 147 feet, 3 inches, missing a berth in the CIF State Championships this coming weekend in Clovis by a foot. The top three MOC qualifiers in each event advance to Clovis and Hall needed a throw of 148-3. John Maka of Pittsburg High School came in first at 168-8.
Four Lake County athletes participated on the final day of the MOC. Along with Hall, Middletown’s Taelor Roderick finished 19th in the shotput at 30-9, Clear Lake’s Paige Woodruff was 21st in the pole vault at 8-11, and Middletown’s Amy Herrmann, the only Lake County athlete to qualify in two MOC events, was right behind Woodruff in 22nd place at 8-5.
During day one of the MOC on Friday, Bryson Trask of Lower Lake High School finished sixth out of a 24-man field in the shotput, uncorking a throw of 47-8 on his final attempt of the day. He needed 53 feet to reach the CIF State Championships. Nicholas Betchart of Washington High School (Fremont) won the event with a throw of 57-1.
Trask was one of four Lake County athletes in action on Friday at the MOC, joining Middletown’s Herrmann (high jump), Kelsey Lemoine (100 meters) and Hanna Morris (discus).
Herrmann had the next-highest finish after Hall and Trask, taking eighth in the high jump after clearing 5 feet even. The top three finishers cleared 5-1 or better, with Katie Hurst of Fortuna winning at 5-6.
Lemoine placed 19th in the 100 preliminaries with a time of 13.07 seconds. The top eight qualifiers move on to Saturday’s finals and Trinity Bolden of Pittsburg ended up winning at 12.09.
Morris finished 22nd in the discus with a toss of 93-6. Hannah-Sophi Hall of James Logan (Union City) won the event at 152-5. She also won the shotput on Saturday.
