LAKEPORT >> After recently announcing the return of the Lakeport Sprint Boat Grand Prix, scheduled for this weekend, promoters of the event said Sunday it has been postponed.
According to race promoter Jack Long, from Clearlake Motor Sports Enterprise, the event will not take place on June 2 and 3 due to contractual issues with the race sanction board.
“It is with great sadness that this event will not take place this weekend as originally planned,” Long explained. “We are committed to making this event happen at a later date this year. We thank our sponsors, vendors and the community for their continued support and understanding as we continue to work diligently to ensure this event takes place.”
Sprint Boat Grand Prix was scheduled to return for its second time at Library Park, with street and property closures to which the City of Lakeport debated approval of the event during a recent city council meeting. The event was only approved with the condition that the County of Lake approved necessary permits including public notices, alcohol sales and payment for city cost and insurance.
During the meeting at City Hall, some council members expressed concern over outstanding funds still owed from last year’s race, but the agreement was reached to allow the event’s return to see if costs would be repaid.
Long explained that this year, organizers were taking a different approach which showed that enough funds would cover this year and to pay last year’s remaining amount.
With the event postponed, the Lakeport Police Department sent out a Nixle notification, clarifying that the Third and Fifth Street boat launch ramps, Fourth and Fifth Streets and Main Street between First and Third Street would no longer be closed from June 1 through 3.
But that may be the case for a future date this year. Event promoters said details on the new schedule would be provided as more information is confirmed.
