WILLIAMS >> An out-of-county woman died Sunday in a Highway 20 head-on-collision near Highway 16, causing Highway 20 to close down for over one hour completely.

Orangevale, California resident Barbara Newton, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene after crashing into a van with five passengers.

The incident occurred just past noon on Highway 20, about a mile east of Highway 16 in Colusa County.

According to the Williams area California Highway Patrol, Newton was driving a Ford Fusion eastbound on Highway 20 when the vehicle drifted off the south shoulder for an unknown reason and collided with a guardrail. The car then traveled uncontrollably into the westbound lane and hit the front of the 2006 Honda Odyssey van, which was moving in that direction.

After the collision, CHP said, the Ford Fusion overturned onto its roof, while the van came to a stop on its wheels still on the westbound lane of Highway 20.

The driver and four passengers, most from Stockton, California, in the Honda were transported for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision.

While authorities investigated the incident around 12:30 p.m., traffic was halted from both lanes from around 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

CHP did not say whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
