LAKE COUNTY >> Lake County has an abundance of wildlife. Bears, mountain lions and other wild animals are commonly seen in many neighborhoods. In fact, the Department of Fish and Wildlife (DWF) estimates that the county’s black bear population is about 1,000 animals.
Caroline Howely lives at the end of a road in Nice. Her property backs up to federal forest land. Howley says that a black bear has taken up residence in her neighborhood and has even been sleeping in her backyard. She said that the bear is a large animal that weighs about 500 pounds and has tipped over her garbage cans looking for food.
According to the DFW, bears are large animals and extremely strong. They are also very fast and can reach speeds of up to 30 mph for short distances. Black bear attacks on humans are extremely rare but they do occur, and there have been fatalities. Even though they are common throughout the county, it is rare to see one because they generally shun people and mostly roam around during nighttime hours.
The DFW says that bears are drawn to neighborhoods because they are looking for food. It is recommended that garbage cans be kept in a garage or other building until just before the collection agencies pick them up. Also, keep all cat and dog food in an enclosed area. If confronted by a bear, stand tall, wave your arms and shout at it. Do not attempt to approach the animal. If the bear appears to be aggressive call 911 and report it.
