CLEARLAKE >> A Clearlake resident driving an automobile was hit by a motorcycle carrying two juveniles Sunday afternoon, causing injuries to both motorcyclists.
According to Clearlake Police Department Sergeant Tim Hobbs, at about 4:30 p.m., 36-year-old Clearlake resident Leslie Johnson was driving a 2004 Ford Mustang east on Austin Drive near Locust Street at the posted speed limit.
Two juveniles were riding a motorcycle south on Locust Street at approximately 20 mph. The motorcycle’s driver failed to stop at the posted stop sign at Locust Street and Austin Drive and drove directly into the path of the Ford Mustang.
Johnson was unable to avoid colliding with the motorcycle and the front of his vehicle struck the motorcycle. Both riders were ejected from the motorcycle.
Hobbs added that officer Chris Kelleher was on patrol in the area, and saw that the motorcycle was on fire when he happened to be in the area of the collision.
Officer Kelleher extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher from his patrol vehicle, Hobbs said. Medical personnel from Lake County Fire Protection District arrived a few minutes later and began treating the juveniles.
One juvenile sustained major injuries and the other sustained moderate injuries. Johnson was not injured. Both juveniles were transported by air ambulance to out-of-county hospitals.
There was no suspicion that alcohol or drugs played a part in the collision.
