COBB MOUNTAIN >> Derek Coulter of Hidden Valley Lake won the 25th annual Lake County Junior Golf Championship on Tuesday at Adams Springs Golf Course. A two-time All-Coastal Mountain Conference golfer and the No. 1 man on the Middletown High School golf team, Coulter opened play with a front-nine 42, ran off a string of pars to shoot a back-nine 38, and carded a 12-over-par 80 to win the overall boys championship by 10 strokes.
Coulter was the runner-up to Matt Wotherspoon in the 2017 Lake County Junior.
Maddie Witt of Clear Lake Riviera backed up her victory on Monday at the Buckingham Summer Junior (see related story, Page A7) by shooting a 108 to win the overall girls championship. She carded a front-nine 55 and then shot 53 on the back nine. Witt is a member of the boys golf team at Kelseyville High School and is now a four-time overall champion of the Lake County Junior.
Andrew Martz of Cobb won the boys 16-17 year division. He carded nines of 42 and 48 for an overall score of 90. Martz earn All-Coastal Mountain Conference second-team honors playing for Middletown High School this past spring. He was the overall boys champion in the Buckingham Summer Junior on Monday.
Sarah Parlee of Lakeport was the titlist in the 14-15 girls division. A member of the boys golf team at Clear Lake High School, Parlee shot 112 to capture her age flight. She is a two-time winner of the Buckingham Summer Junior (2016 and ‘17).
Miles Mattina of Lakeport shot 101 to win the 14-15 boys flight. He is an incoming freshman at Clear Lake High School and intends to play on the golf team in the spring. Charles Johnson of Kelseyville shot a solid 89 to capture the 12-13 boys division. Johnson first competed in the Lake County Junior as a 6-year-old and has now played in the tournament for seven straight years. Billy Witt of Clear Lake Riviera won the 9-10-11 boys flight with a nine-hole score of 61. Witt also won his division in the Buckingham Summer Junior on Monday.
The Lake County Junior Golf Championship is sponsored by the Callayomi Masonic Lodge of Clearlake, Eddie and Linda Mullins of Adams Springs Golf Course, Adams Springs Golf Club, the Buckingham Tournament Players Club, Jack and Sharon Lucich of Clearlake, and John and Julie Berry of Kelseyville High School golf. Volunteer tournament officials and marshals included NCGA rules official Jack Lucich, John Flynn of Cobb, Jerry Pendleton of Lakeport, Armond Urbano of Middletown, Al Mankins of Riviera Heights, Jacob Lopez of Lakeport, and Julie Berry of Lakeport. Special commendation was made to Lucich and Mankins for serving as tournament volunteers for all 25 editions of the Lake County Junior.
