BUCKINGHAM >> The Summer Buckingham Junior Golf Tournament was contested on Monday under smoky skies at Buckingham Golf and Country Club alongside the base of Mount Konocti.
The tournament was delayed one week because of the Mendocino Complex fires still burning in the county. A handful of contestants withdrew from the field because of poor air quality or because their families were still evacuated because of the wildfires. Tournament director Ted Matilla, the PGA golf professional at Buckingham as well as the golf coach at Clear Lake High School, limited the tournament to just nine holes because of Monday’s air quality.
Andrew Martz of Cobb won the boys overall championship after carding a 52 for nine holes. Martz is going into his junior year at Middletown High School and was the No. 3 man on a very competitive Middletown High golf team this past spring. He also was honored on the All-Coastal Mountain Conference second team in 2018.
Maddie Witt of Clear Lake Riviera captured the overall girls championship with a score of 55. Witt is a two-time Lake County Junior champion. She has been the No. 4 golfer on the boys team at Kelseyville High School for the past two years.
Miles Mattina of Lakeport won the boys 14-15 division with a score of 57. Mattina is an incoming freshman at Clear Lake High School. Charles Johnson of Kelseyville took home the boys 12-13 flight with a score of 54. Johnson has played in five consecutive Buckingham Summer Juniors and is entering the sixth grade at Mountain Vista Middle School. Billy Witt of Clear Lake Riviera captured the boys 9-10-title, carding a 62. Witt is entering the fourth grade at Riviera Elementary School.
The Buckingham Summer Junior is sponsored by the Buckingham Tournament Players Club and the Buckingham Men’s Club Niners.
