KELSEYVILLE >> The chances are pretty good you’ve seen Becca Brookes somewhere around Lake County. You might have encountered that slim blonde girl running, cycling or even swimming at some point during her rigorous training schedule.
Brookes, who celebrates her 25th birthday on Friday, is a triathlete who most recently competed in the Santa Rosa Ironman Triathlon. The daughter of Steven and Lynn Brookes and a 2012 graduate of Kelseyville High School, Becca is a fifth-generation Lake County resident.
Brookes competed against more than 2,000 athletes from around the world during the Santa Rosa competition, which features a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride followed by a 26.2-mile run, in all a total of 140.6 miles traveled. Cheered on by a host of college teammates, family and friends, she completed the grueling endurance test in 13 hours and 4 minutes to place fifth in her age division.
After graduating from Kelseyville, Brookes attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2016. While at Cal Poly, she joined the triathlon team.
Assisting Brookes in her dream of competing in a triathlon were Jeff Cramer of Main Street Bicycles in Lakeport and coach/trainer Dave Sullivan, who kept her on track during 10 months of training for the Santa Rosa Triathlon.
Brookes, who currently resides in Kelseyville, said she plans to participate in other triathlons and perhaps even another Ironman. She begins graduate studies next month at the University of Health Sciences in Portland, Oregon.
