COLUSA >> Colusa handed the Middletown Mustangs a 25-21, 25-19, 25-13 loss in non-league varsity volleyball action on Thursday night in Colusa.

Colusa (2-0) also beat Clear Lake in straight sets on Tuesday. Middletown is now 0-2 on the season.

“It was a battle and our team did great,” Middletown coach Vanessa Davis said. “We played well together.”

Senior libero Taelor Roderick sparked Middletown on defense with 16 digs.

“She had a great game and passed well,” Davis said.

Shea Rockwell, a senior left-side hitter, pounded out seven kills and had the best match of her career, according to Davis.

“It’s the best she’s every played,” Davis said.

Abi Hibner led the Mustangs with eight kills and five blocks while Taylor Griffin added five kills.

“They were hitting around her all night,” Davis said of Colusa’s strategy to avoid Hibner as much as possible.

“Colusa was really good and has some great hitters,” Davis said. “It was a good loss for us. We had great attitudes all the way around.”

Middletown’s JV team lost in two sets. Scores weren’t reported.

Middletown hosts a varsity tournament on Saturday that features Kelseyville, Lower Lake, Fort Bragg, Willits and St. Helena. Action begins at 8 a.m.

In other volleyball action Thursday:

K’ville def. Ukiah

At Ukiah, the Kelseyville Knights battled back to beat the Ukiah Wildcats 22-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 17-15 in a marathon non-league match.

It was the season opener for the Knights, who also faced off with the Wildcats during a scrimmage last weekend in Kelseyville.

“They played a lot better than they did in the scrimmage,” Kelseyville coach Donelle McCallister said. “Their setter did a really good job feeding the hitters, and they pounded the ball hard at us. We just happened to pick up most of them.”

While match statistics were not available, McCallister said standouts were Allison Bryant, Kat Brown, Paige Bour, Payton Conrad and Grace Davidson, who had a strong overall match.

“Grace was serving, passing, digging, doing everything,” McCallister said. “She really did a great job.”

Ukiah won the JV match 25-11, 18-25, 15-12.

The varsity Knights return to action Saturday in the Middletown Tournament.

Fort Bragg JVs def. Upper Lake JVs

At Fort Bragg, the Fort Bragg JV team beat Upper Lake’s JVs 25-11, 25-20.

Results of the varsity match were not available.
