LAKE COUNTY >> St. Vincent needed the minimum three sets to beat the Upper Lake Cougars in North Central League II varsity volleyball action on Thursday evening in Upper Lake.

St. Vincent defeated Upper Lake 25-18, 25-7, 25-14, the Cougars’ third loss in four league matches.

Junior varsity coach Dani Paige Gudmundson Pena and her assistant Fawn Rave also coached the varsity on Thursday as varsity head coach Raelene Cromwell was out sick.

“Even though we lost, our defensive coverage was a thing of beauty,” Gudmundson Pena said. “There is a hole we tend to create that could use some extra work, but the girls never gave up once, so I can’t complain.”

Standouts for Upper Lake were Coco Doyle and Alana Sanchez on the net and Maria Wade on defense. Gudmundson Pena also praised Seneca Snow’s court leadership.

“She kept the team together on the court, making sure everyone kept their heads up,” Gudmundson Pena said.

Upper Lake’s JVs beat St. Vincent 25-12, 26-24 behind Cadence Santana’s seven aces and zero service errors in 15 serves, and Molly McCabe’s five kills.

“Tonight was our best game yet,” Gudmundson Pena said. “I’m so proud of the way the girls played.”

Added Gudmundson Pena, “McCabe was extremely aggressive defensively. All in all I am very happy with the way the girls played.”
