ARCATA >> Injuries, food poisoning and a staring lineup snafu made it a somewhat painful weekend for the Clear Lake High School varsity volleyball team on Saturday at the Arcata Tournament.

Despite all that, the Cardinals still managed to reach the championship match, losing to Fortuna 25-20, 25-23.

Clear Lake players Shaelyn McIntire and Joy Ingalls banged up their elbows during the course of the tournament although neither injury is serious, according to Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds, who was the food poisoning victim after consuming a coffee drink that made her stomach extremely upset.

To top it off, the people working the tournament’s scoring table entered the wrong starting lineup for the Cardinals and didn’t catch it until well into a match.

“It took about 20 minutes to figure out,” Psalmonds said. “I finally just told them I would use the players they had written down. I think they used an old lineup card.”

Clear Lake beat Hoopa 25-6, 25-13 in the semifinals before running into Fortuna in the finals. Earlier in pool play Clear Lake beat St. Bernard of Eureka 25-19, 25-10 after losses to Yreka 25-22, 18-25, 15-12 and McKinleyville 25-19, 25-23.

Clear Lake setter Kylie Udy had a good tournament with 72 assists.

The Cardinals are on the road again Tuesday to play Fort Bragg in a North Central League I match. Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m.
