FORT BRAGG — The defense and midfield are doing the job for coach Annie Zombil’s young Clear Lake High School girls soccer squad, but the offense remains a work in progress after a 4-1 North Central League I loss to the Fort Bragg Timberwolves on Tuesday evening in Fort Bragg.

“We had 10-15 shots, most of those one-on-ones with the keeper, but we cannot finish,” Zombil said. “We couldn’t convert. It’s just inexperience, but we’re working on it.”

Clear Lake (0-3, 1-6) limited Fort Bragg to a single goal in the first half, but the Timberwolves scored three more times in the second half to build a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals ended the shutout on Angelica Garnica’s goal, assisted by Mavis Pyorre, late in the second half.

Zombil had high praise for the play of her freshmen, especially keeper Trinity Jardstrom, who stopped 16 shots, many of them tough chances.

“It was just awesome,” Zombil said of Jardstrom’s effort.

“The new freshmen players are stepping up, working hard,” Zombil said.

Other standouts were Kristianna Wagner, Marissa Molinero and Donna Rodriguez.

“Even though we didn’t win, it’s looking good,” Zombil said of the team’s progress. “They’re improving.”
